Viking river cruisers named

Celebratory naming ceremony for the newly built Viking ships in Amsterdam

The naming ceremony for the two river cruisers VIKING BEYLA and VIKING ASTRILD, built by the NEPTUN WERFT shipyard, was held on 24 March. The godmothers of the ships' christening were Ms Adriana Filkaszova and Ms Sinemie Theodora Bakker, both of them long-serving employees of the shipping company.
These are the first ships to be built by NEPTUN WERFT for the particularly demanding Elbe route. VIKING BEYLA and VIKING ASTRILD are now the 59th and 60th river cruisers to be built at the NEPTUN WERFT shipyard in Rostock-Warnemünde since 2002.
The new vessels are the result of a consistent redesign, in which the focus was on reducing the weight of all the components. The objective was to develop a modern river cruiser with a very low draught for use on the Elbe, without forfeiting anything in terms of the comfort and high standards associated with the shipping company. A number of innovative materials were employed to minimise the weight of the ship; this represents the first time that these materials have been encountered in inland shipping in this configuration. All of the components were analysed and constructed for optimum weight characteristics, while several materials had to undergo extensive tests and trials in order to obtain the permit for their use. A large testing area was constructed at the shipyard, in which the new components were tested, and new machining and processing guidelines drawn up.
To ensure that Viking's very high standards would also be satisfied by these passenger ships, know-how gained previously with Viking ships on the rivers of Europe was incorporated in the development of this new ship type.
In the case of the VIKING BEYLA with yard number S. 559, the lead ship development and first-time use of innovative components were funded with innovation aid from the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi) and the federal state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Looking back on 2014

A historic year comes to an end - North West German Shipbuilders enter the European stage

Papenburg/Rostock, 29. December 2014 – For MEYER WERFT and NEPTUN WERFT 2014 was a historic year full of challenges. Early in the year talks started regarding a merger with STX Finland, which were concluded in late summer by establishing MEYER TURKU Oy. In 2014 the deliveries of five river cruise ships, two sea-going cruise ships and the research vessel Sonne in Papenburg, and the delivery of ten river cruise ships in Rostock/Warnemünde provided sufficient work.

The Quantum of the Seas was the biggest ship to date the yard had to build and to deliver. Next to the research vessel Sonne the design and the construction of this cruise ship in merely 20 months posed another challenge. It took a lot of commitment to hand over this ship in time and in good condition. "It is this kind of commitment and motivation that we need for the years to come," said managing partner Bernard Meyer.

What was special in 2014 was the implementation of the new building strategy in Papenburg. The only way to build two large ships per year in building dock II is to divide each new ship in two large floating parts. This new building strategy is also a benefit for NEPTUN WERFT because in the future the yard will be able to deliver complete engine room modules. This ensures a balanced workload in Papenburg and Warnemünde; hence the prioritised strategic goal of securing the economic future of both yards is reached.

In the next few years NEPTUN WERFT and MEYER WERFT will plan, design and build a total of eight cruise ships and 17 river cruise vessels. These order books as well as the consistent implementation of the corporate strategy offer both yards a good chance to stand their ground in the highly competitive shipbuilding market.

In 2014 MEYER TURKU delivered Mein Schiff 3 to TUI Cruises, which will be followed by Mein Schiff 4 in 2015. Another two ships for TUI Cruises will be delivered in 2016 and 2017. These orders as well as a new pre-contract for a highly economic ferry for the Estonian shipping company AS Tallink pave the way for a positive trend of the Finnish yard.

Deliveries in 2014

In January the 146,000-gt Norwegian Getaway, the second ship of this class, was delivered to the US cruise company Norwegian Cruise Line. In late October the 168,666-gt Quantum of the Seas was handed over to Royal Caribbean International, hitherto the largest cruise ship built in Germany, which was completed at record speed in merely 20 months.

NEPTUN WERFT delivered ten river cruise ships and the research vessel Sonne. The river cruise ships were the Viking Hermod, Viking Buri, Viking Heimdal (all delivered in January), Viking Delling, Viking Gullveig (both delivered in February), Viking Kvasir, Viking Idi (both delivered in April), Viking Kara, Viking Hlin (both delivered in June), Viking Mani (delivered August). All ships are operated by the Basel-based cruise company Viking River Cruises.

Ships under construction or on order

MEYER WERFT currently has the Anthem of the Seas under construction, which is scheduled for completion in the spring of 2015. Construction work on the second ship, the Norwegian Escape, has started as well with the production of two floating parts in the yard's building dock II. This ship will be delivered to Norwegian Cruise Line in the autumn of 2015. All told, the yard's order book comprising eight ships will last into 2019.

The order book of NEPTUN WERFT in Rostock comprises an additional 17 river cruise vessels for Viking River Cruises AG. In the future NEPTUN WERFT will also build blocks and fully completed engine room modules for MEYER WERFT. Hence the workload for the yard in Warnemünde is secured until well into 2016.

LNG Tanker CORAL ENERGY completed

First LNG tanker with dual-fuel engine for Anthony Veder

Papenburg/Rostock, January 3, 2012 - MEYER WERFT completed today its new Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) tanker, the CORAL ENERGY, for the Dutch owner Anthony Veder, based in Rotterdam. It is the first ship of a new gas tanker type which is equipped with an eco-friendly dual-fuel engine. The tanker is operated with natural gas bringing the emissions of the vessel to extremely low values which are clearly below the prospective applicable limits for ECA-areas.

The ship was already named in Rotterdam on December 7 by Her Royal Highness Princess Máxima of the Netherlands. This event was perceived as very special by all stakeholders involved in the small to midscale LNG business.

For decades MEYER WERFT has specialized in building gas tankers. 55 gas tankers have been built in the past years. The new tanker built for transporting LNG which is cooled down to minus 161°C has a length of abt. 155 m and a breadth of 22.70 m with a cargo capacity of 15,600 m³ and a maximum speed of 15.80 kn. Fully loaded with LNG the ship will have a draught of 8.20 m. MEYER WERFT will further develop this new propulsion system intensively so that this technology can also be used on passenger ships in the future.

The ship owner Anthony Veder is specialized in transporting gas by seagoing vessels. Its fleet currently consists of more than 25 ships. MEYER WERFT and the Anthony Veder have collaborated in both the new building and the repair sector since the middle of the 1970s.

The ship has proven its seaworthiness during the seal trials when all systems and plants were tested.

Rostock, 05.12.2012 - Viking River Cruises in Basle (Switzerland) placed an order for 10 new river cruise vessels of the Viking Longship class with the NEPTUN WERFT in Rostock-Warnemünde. Two of the ships will be delivered in August and September 2013, the other new builds will be delivered by April 2014.

This order brings the total number of new vessels to be delivered to Viking to 10 in 2013 and eight in 2014. In addition options for a further eight Viking Longships with delivery in the spring 2015 have been signed.

"We are very happy to continue our excellent partnership with Viking River Cruises and look forward to a long-lasting relationship in building these luxurious river cruise vessels" so Manfred Müller-Fahrenholz, managing director of NEPTUN WERFT.
